Jizō – Heart of Gold

Description

Jizō is another of the great wisdom Bodhisattvas of Japanese Esoteric Buddhism. A Bodhisattva is an awakened being who dedicates their life to the liberation of all beings.

Jizō’s name in Sanskrit is Ksitigarbha which translates to the womb of the earth. He represents supreme compassion, and is the protector of lost souls.

In this song Adrian combines the Japanese mantra of Jizō with original lyrics that describe Jizō’s journey to offer comfort to those lost and vulnerable souls.

When traveling in Japan, you may see statues dressed in red cloth. These are representations of Jizō, who is the Buddhist divinity loved most by Japanese people. You will find Jizō statues in many places: in temples, at the side of the countryside roads, and at the corner of some streets in the cities.

Some of Jizō’s qualities include: unflagging optimism, courage, gentleness, and a nurturing love for all beings.

The primary role of Jizō is to protect children. This explains why, in Studio Ghibli’s animation movie “My Neighbor Totoro,” when little Mei gets lost, she finds refuge next to Jizō statues. Jizō also protects the souls of children who passed away and unborn babies.

The other central role of Jizō is to protect travelers, which is why you will often find Jizō statues on the side of the roads, on mountain pathways, crossroads, and at the borders of villages. Some of the statues are very ancient, giving a truly mystical atmosphere to the Japanese countryside.

Jizō Bodhisattva is always depicted as a humbly dressed monk, male or female, with a shaved head, simple robes, monk’s staff, and a gentle, kind face that paradoxically combines a sweet innocence together with a fierce protective stability and resolve.

Mantra

Mantra for Jizō

Om Ka Ka Ka Bi San Ma E Sowa Ka

Translation: O wondrous one! svāhā!

Sowaka’ is the Japanese pronunciation for the Sanskrit ‘Svaha’.
Svaha is derived from the Sanskrit root words ‘Svah’ and ‘Aha’.
an offering to the divine, an act of surrendering to the higher energies.

The Jizō mantra “Om Ka Ka Kabi San Ma E Sowa Ka” invokes Jizō’s presence and can help to dispel distressing thoughts or energy and offer well-being and protection.

Jizō is said to be profoundly optimistic, courageous, and gentle offering their presence to any place, situation, or being in need of help. Jizō offers support and protection for all beings, those that are well, those that are vulnerable, those in transition between life and death as well as those in the hell realms. Jizō is said to carry a light that banishes all fear.

The Jizō mantra is said to help practitioners heal their minds and hearts during times of grief and loss.

The archetypal qualities that Jizō embodies — fearlessness, protection, and fierce love — are the very same qualities we call forth in ourselves whenever we turn fully toward the complexity of our grief.

Jizo Painting

Some say that chanting the mantra while visualizing Jizō engaged in various activities can be particularly beneficial. For example, one might visualize Jizō leading rescuers to the injured, or soothing those who are troubled by trauma.

Jizō Bodhisattva encourages us to turn fearlessly toward what is difficult and painful, to staying open, to holding the complexity of it all.

Jizō is one of the most popular and beloved Bodhisattvas in Mahayana Buddhism. This is because his great vow to save all beings from suffering resonates with so many people. When we chant or sing his mantra we are reminded of our own potential to make a difference in the world and to help those who are suffering.

Jizō, Jizō Bodhisattva
Oh! my Lord
Fairest of them all

Healing, radiant, guardian Deity
All the lost and wounded children come to Thee
With your silver light of love and purity
And your gentle majesty

Oh Jizō, Jizō Bodhisattva
Gently entering the Hell realms
Offering a softening
Comfort for the suffering souls

Oh Jizō, Jizō Bodhisattva
In the oceans of the desolate
Hope for the desperate
Shining with your heart of gold
